Mince and Tatties (Scotland)
A true Scottish classic and the country's national dish, mince and tatties are eaten regularly throughout the year in Scotland. Although there are many varieties, the dish is traditionally made with ground beef (mince) and potatoes (tatties).
Ground beef is often made from lower quality cuts of beef and allows tough meat to soften through grinding, masking its poor quality in the process. Beef is cooked in a thick sauce with various vegetables such as carrots and celery, while potatoes are often mashed with the addition of cream and butter.
Despite being an inexpensive comfort food, mince and tatties beat gourmet fare like beef tenderloin, haggis, and smoked salmon in a poll of the nation's favorite dishes.
