Himmel Und Erde (Germany)
Himmel und Erde is a traditional German dish that dates back to the 18th century. The name of the dish means Heaven and Earth, derived from Erdapfel, an old word for potato. The meal consists of mashed potatoes paired with apple sauce.
While it is mostly served with meat dishes, it is recommended to have blood sausage with it. In this case, the dish is sometimes called Himmel, Erde, and Höllen (Heaven, Earth, and Hell). Today, there are countless variations of the original recipe, depending on the region, but the classic version is still most popular in its place of origin, the Rhineland.
