Bauru (Brazil)
A real Brazilian classic, Bauru
is a sandwich of crispy breads stuffed with melted cheese, tomatoes, sliced
pickles and roast beef. Bauru was invented by Casemiro Pinto Neto, also known
as Bauru (after his hometown), a law student and cook at the Ponte Chic restaurant
in São Paulo in the 1930s, who told him to make a special sandwich just for
himself.
The popularity of the restaurant,
which was frequented by politicians and football players who liked the new
sandwich, grew rapidly and became the best-selling product of the restaurant.
Today, the sandwich still has an army of fans and a huge number of varieties.
